A doctor from Kolkata was raped and murdered the night before. What did CBI get?

KOLKATA: Four colleagues of the 31-year-old doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital will be put through a lie-detector test as their statements contradict each other, CBI sources said. It consists of two first-year postgraduate trainees, one house surgeon and one intern.

Sources in the central agency have said that it does not appear that the four doctors were involved in the crime, but it wants to probe whether they played a role in tampering with evidence or were part of a conspiracy. Investigators have also pieced together the sequence of events of the night before the doctor was sexually assaulted and murdered.

According to Kolkata Police's timeline of events, one of these doctors spotted the victim's body in the seminar hall around 9.30 am the next day and alerted the authorities. All four doctors were interrogated by the city police before the CBI took over the investigation, the timeline said.

What did the CBI find?

The CBI has recovered the fingerprints of two of these four doctors from the third floor seminar room where the body was found. The house surgeon was caught on CCTV camera going from the first floor to the third floor that night. The house surgeon says that he went to the third floor at 2.45 pm. The intern was on the third floor and spoke to the victim that night, the CBI has learned.

What happened that night

According to sources, the victim and two first-year postgraduate trainees had dinner around midnight. He then went to the seminar room and watched Neeraj Chopra's javelin event at the Olympics. Around 2 am the two colleagues went to the sleeping room where the doctors on duty rested. The victim was returning to the seminar room. The intern has said that he was in the intern's room. These three rooms - seminar hall, sleep and intern room are located close to each other on the third floor.

The Morning After

Around 9.30am, a postgraduate trainee doctor, with whom the victim had had dinner the previous night, went to find her before she started her ward rounds. A Kolkata police timeline says they "found her body in a motionless state a short distance away". He then informed his colleagues and senior doctors who alerted the hospital authorities.
