On the dark and cold night of 16th December 2012, a 23-year-old woman was brutally attacked and gang-raped in a moving bus in South Delhi. Jyoti Singh, the victim, a 23-year-old female physiotherapy intern who was a medical student was beaten, gang-raped and tortured on 16th December 2012 in Munirka while she was traveling with her friend Avindra Pratap Pandey.

History and facts of the case
The victim and his friend were returning home on the night of 16 December 2012 after watching a movie called Life of Pi. After watching the film, they left at Munirka bus stand to board an off-duty charter bus which was already carrying 6 other men. bus driver

The bus, which had yellow and green lines/stripes and the word Yadav written on it, was heading towards Dwarka-Palam road but the bus started moving in an off-road direction and the men closed the doors of the vehicle. Suspecting that something was wrong, when the victim's friend claimed responsibility, he shouted and a confused fight ensued as the drunken men began to molest the victim. The victim's friend was knocked down with an iron rod and the men dragged the victim to the back of the bus and repeatedly gang-raped the victim for an hour.

When the victim fought back, one of the teenage assailants inserted an iron rod into the victim's private parts and pulled out her intestines. While this was happening the bus-driver drove the bus across Delhi after the attack, both were thrown from the bus to die on the side of the road. A passerby who saw the victim and his friend lying half dead on the road informed the Delhi Police.

When the police arrived, the victim was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital where doctors found that only 5% of her intestines remained in her body. The victim failed to resist her injuries on 29 December 2012 and died at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore - sepsis with multiple organ failure following multiple injuries. In her dying declaration, the victim said that she wanted justice against the 6 attackers namely: Ram Singh, Mukesh Singh, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Kishore.

What happened to the attackers?
In the Nirbhaya rape case, the court has convicted all 6 people including the juvenile. Ram Singh, a bus driver, committed suicide in Tihar Jail on 11 March 2013 during the trial.

The minor was tried separately in juvenile court and sentenced to a maximum of 3 years in a correctional facility. On September 2013, the trial court sentenced Mukesh, Akshay, Pawan and Vinay to death. Subsequently, the 3 convicts other than Akshay sought a review of the judgment which was further dismissed. The order on the review petition filed by Akshay was dismissed by the Supreme Court on 18 December 2019.

The 4 convicts who received the death sentence for the gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old medical student named Nirbhaya in Delhi more than 7 years ago will be hanged on 3 March 2020 at 6 am. A third death warrant was issued by the court. The previous 2 death warrants could not be executed as the convicts took it in turn to exhaust every legal option available to them. The death warrant was issued after the Tihar Jail authorities informed the trial court that 3 of the 4 convicts have exhausted all legal options and none of them currently have any correspondence left, leaving one convict Akshay Singh who has entered curative. is President or a mercy petition which is later rejected by the President. They have also exhausted the 1-week period allowed by the High Court to exercise all their legal options and will have to approach the Supreme Court for an extension.

Current view
The Supreme Court on 19 March 2020 upheld the Delhi High Court's sentencing verdict in the 4 Nirbhaya rape cases, saying they were "rare of the rare" crimes that had shaken the nation's conscience, and the Supreme Court rejected Nirbhaya's mercy plea. 4 convicts and on 20 March 2020 at 6 am the execution of 4 convicts was stayed.

conclusion
After the Nirbhaya rape case, where a woman was out late at night as she was enjoying her life and freedom, she was brutally raped, our government though took steps to improve the situation but it did not help the woman much, but However, Nirbhaya. The rape case, known as the worst case of crime against women in India's history, has a lasting impact on the nation.
