Caused by monkeypox virus (MPXV), Mpox is an infectious disease that can cause a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, and low energy.

A 24-year-old man who died recently at a private hospital in Malappuram was infected with the Nipah virus, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said on Sunday, September 19.

Kerala's health minister said "available samples were immediately sent for testing" after the regional medical officer who investigated the death suspected of 'Nipah infection'.

"It turned out to be positive," the minister added.

The man, a native of Naduwath in Malappuram, was a student in Bengaluru and had come home to seek treatment for a leg injury. Later, he developed fever and consulted doctors at various hospitals. He died on September 9 at a private hospital in Parinthalmanna.

Health officials in Malappuram said that after the Kozhikode Medical College results showed a positive result, a high-level meeting was held by the Health Minister on Saturday night itself and necessary steps were initiated as per protocol.
